I should look for a junker somewhere and try it.įWIW, I've got nothing in general against all-laminate guitars. I don't know how I would get on with one that did, IIRC my music store mate has done it, I could ask him. It worked fine, but it was on a guitar that didn't have a truss rod. I've done a Frank Ford reset using a hand saw and without removing the neck. I have a few which need a neck reset so i'd likely just pass them on to someone who would be up to the challenge.

The Owner prcdant said she in 1973, Yamaha Global Support for APRS me just confirm the serial number that my copy was produced from 1972 t and 1974. Mine is 'Made in Taiwan', apparently some have t produced in Japan (Nippon Gakki mention). I know Frank Ford mentioned oh his site that he "reset the neck" by sawing off the neck at the dovetail using a bone saw. Years of production: from 1968 to mid-70s. I don't know if any advancements have been made, but apparently the necks were glued in with epoxy. The problem, as John mentioned is getting a neck reset done. They don't sound like a prewar Martin that is for sure.
Elliot Smith played an FG-180 if you want to hear what they sound like. Here are some pics, it looks much cleaner in the pics than in person but I like the heavily played, vintage look and feel this guitar has.They have a cool sound, IMO.

I'm going to work on the frets a little more and install a plate mate because the bridge plate is very chewed up but I've been playing the mess out of this guitar since I got it, it's a keeper. Featuring a classic semi-gloss finish and high-quality components, FG Red Label guitars capture an authentic vintage. These parts may or may not fit 1977 and later models. My current focus has been the 1966-1976 models. Cleaned up all the hardware and added a bit of oil to the tuners and got them turning smoothly again I am offering some replacement parts for early vintage Yamaha FG’s. That way if I pull it up again it won't pull up wood fibers again. I had to reglue half the rosette and add some finish to the bare wood under there to protect and get a flat surface for the new pickguard I made to stick to. Removed hack job replacement pickguard and cleaned the area underneath (there was wood filler and some other unknown junk under there!).

Patched the bridge with rosewood where a large slot was cut through all the bridge pin holes. Mine was so badly abused that if it had been solid wood it would have been destroyed many years ago! I will include a couple sets of New Strings. It hasnt had a set up in a few years but its playing excellent. Id say, if it is one of those models in good shape, maybe 300 give or take. I know in the old days a lot of bluegrassers that could afford a second Martin used them as their backup guitar. The quality of those Guitars is legendary Really good shape. The Yamaha Red Label FG-180 is the only one that I know of that is particularly sought after.
I just bought an FG-300 recently as well. Will ship in a Taylor Gig Bag in fantastic shape.
